Recycling Center

The Recycling Center is provided by Alpine County. Capital costs are funded by the California Integrated Waste Management Board and the State Department of Conservation, Division of Recycling. Revenue collected from materials goes toward the maintenance of the program.

Please help keep costs down by sorting, flattening, and stacking the materials by type into the appropriate containers. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Recycling center is open Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Accepted Materials

  • Aluminum beverage cans
  • Cardboard (flattened at seams, separate and box small cardboard, i.e. cereal boxes)
  • Catalogs
  • Glass (cleaned with no lids)
  • Magazines
  • Motor Oil
  • Newspaper
  • Plastic containers (cleaned and flattened)
  • Tin cans
  • White paper

Not Accepted Materials

  • Aluminum foil
  • Antifreeze
  • Gasoline
  • Junk mail
  • Packaging
  • Plastic bags
  • Styrofoam
  • Take-out food containers
  • Waxed milk cartons

South Tahoe Refuse

South Tahoe Refuse located at 2140 Ruth Avenue in South Lake Tahoe accepts the following hazardous waste:

  • Aerosol cans
  • Automobile fluids (antifreeze and motor oil)
  • Electronic waste ($25 fee per TV or computer monitor)
  • Household and car batteries
  • Mercury containing items (fluorescent tubes and bulbs)
  • Oil-based paints

South Tahoe Refuse Hazardous Waste Facility is open Tuesday - Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Please call 530-542-8368 for an appointment.

Douglas Disposal

Douglas Disposal located at the end of Pinenut Road off Highway 395 in Gardnerville, accepts most of the same hazardous waste as South Tahoe Refuse. Douglas Disposal  Hazardous Waste Facility is available by appointment only Thursday- Saturday.  Please call 775-782-5713 for an appointment.

Batteries Plus

Batteries Plus located at 1400 S. Carson Street in Carson City (775-884-0566) accepts household and car batteries.
