Basque Oven

IMG_0631The old Basque bread oven was located in Hope Valley, California at a sheepherder ranch and was built in 1933. The oven was used for making bread for the sheepherders that worked in the mountains. The Basque oven stands at 6 feet and is 6 1/2 feet in diameter, dome shaped, made of brick, two large bands hold the brick together, sand is spread on the roof of the oven, it is believed to weigh over 5,000 pounds and has a small door to put logs into the fire.
